HSP 711M Visiting Professor's Seminar: Luck, talent and desert
Instructor: Olli Loukola, University of Helsinki
The starting point of this seminar is a view stated by John Rawls in his
Theory of Justice (1971), who said that, since our natural talents are the
outcome of a natural lottery, "no one deserves his greater natural
capacities", and because of this, we are "to regard the distribution of
natural talents as a common asset and to share in the benefits of this
distribution whatever it turns out to be". This conception has brought luck
into the center stage of discussions of justice over the past 30 years, and
has had a permanent effect on egalitarian thinking, especially when
theorizing equality of opportunity and of resources. Such theories are in
important ways built on our ethical intuitions concerning desert and merit,
and praise and blame, which take us first back into the history of
philosophy and to the question whether natural talents are somehow deserved,
that is, whether we can be blamed or praised for possessing them, whether
their possession is voluntary or involuntary, or even whether they amount to
something like moral virtues ("excellences").
Secondly, these issues will be deepened through an investigation into the
concept of natural talent itself, with questions such as: What are natural
talents? Are they illusions and mere results of education and training?
Can one be obligated to develop one’s talents? Are certain kinds of talents
more bound up in ethical concerns than other kinds? Thirdly, the central
role of natural talents and "high abilities" (i.e. blends of intelligence,
giftedness, talent, and creativity) will be discussed within educational
theory, especially in moral education, and educational equality.
